"Why I Am Proud To Be An American" (topic)

Two of the essay's which were submitted for the Americanism Essay Report were forwarded to The National Americanism Committee.  I received a call from Larry O'Laughlin and was told that one of our kids was picked for SECOND PLACE in Division I. There were over 74,000 essays received nationally.  Travis Rutherford Jr., 5th grader at SY Jackson Elementary School,  in Albuquerque, is  the recipient of a $300.00 savings bond for winning second place nationally.

Albuquerque Lodge # 461 and the Las Vegas Lodge # 408 were the only lodges to submit essay's.  Hopefully, next year, more lodges will participate.

A Day to Remember!

Today is December 7th, Pearl Harbor Day, a day that started a journey which cost thousands of lives to insure that our country would not be invaded by a foreign government. The Veterans of our country, which fought this war are starting to dwindle with time but for those who remain, and our new veterans, we must continue to give support to their needs as they gave support to us many years ago and are giving support now.

Today as well as this week, take the time to visit our Veterans and give them thanks for their great contributions to us. On this day, take a few minutes of your time to give thanks in prayer or silent thought for what has been done for us. Make sure our United States flag is flying, wear your flag lapel pin, and remind those around us the importance of observing this day.

Sincerely and Respectfully,

Tom Tuttle- Idaho State Elks Americanism Chairman
