"New Mexico - Hot for Progress" (From 2011-12 NMEA State President John Hilliard)
Hello from the Land of Enchantment, the 5th largest State in our Country!
On behalf of the New Mexico Elks Association, I welcome you to our website. I encourage you to browse around and learn more about our 22 Lodges consisting of over 10,000 members. Just click on the newsletter section and enjoy the bulletins from our Lodges to see what might interest you.
Hilliard Pin Our state major project is Cerebral Palsy, helping kids to walk without assistance. We have a strong relationship with the renowned Carrie Tingley Hospital in Albuquerque, where we provide our assistance with "Walkable" devices for use in therapy and training with health care professionals. Since 1951, the New Mexico Elks have been leading the charge to provide funding for this most worthy program.
Our Ritual Program has become one of the top programs in our Organization. New Mexico has produced two National Ritual Champions and numerous second and third place teams over the past ten years, allowing New Mexico to be listed among the top Ritual States in the nation.
The state capital, Santa Fe, is home to the Palace of the Governors, the oldest continually occupied public building in the United States, erected in the early 17th century. Albuquerque, the largest city, hosts the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the most photographed event in the world, where over 700 hot air, gas and special shapes balloons gather every October.
Albuquerque also has the Tram. Its two cars are capable of carrying 50 passengers each. A trip up the mountain takes fifteen minutes to ascend 3,819 ft and the normal operating speed of the tram is 12 miles per hour. Approximately four "flights" leave every hour from the base and top departure stations. The view from the tram includes all of Albuquerque and roughly 11,000 square miles of the New Mexico countryside.
New Mexico is truly unique with its varying climates and beautiful sunsets and picturesque mountains, visit us and you’ll understand why we are “The Land of Enchantment”. Many of the 22 Lodges in our state are located in some of the most historical settings, from the caverns in Carlsbad, through the alien city of Roswell, across the White Sands of Alamogordo and follow old Route 66 from Tucumcari through Albuquerque and Gallup.
My wife, Vicki, and I invite you to come and visit our State and enjoy the "Land of Enchantment" and sample our hot chili peppers, locally grown, and wonderful (spicy) New Mexican cuisine.
