Americanism Grand Lodge Americanism Essay Contest 2008-2009 "The American Dream: What is it?" Deadline: 1/10/2010
The Americanism essay contest is an opportunity for school children in grades 5-8 to compose a personal essay on this American patriotic theme. The essay contest is offered through subordinate Lodge that choose to participate in ths contest. The children submit their essays to the local Lodge and compete for national Monetary prizes. The Lodge that sponsors a national winner is presented a recognition plaque at the Grand Lodge Convention. There are two divisions, for grades 5-6 and grades 7-8. Prize money has been increased. The first-place winner in each division will receive a $1,000 U.S. Savings bond. Second-place will receive a $500 bond, and third-place winners will receive a $250 bond.

Bowling 32nd Annual New Mexico Elks Bowling Tournament February 6-7, 2010
The 2010 tournament is again at the Starlight Lanes in the Santa Ana Star Casino. Maps to the locations can be found be doing a search either on Yahoo or Google for Bernalillo, NM. The same map will also give you motel options and prices. Sign up sheets must be returned by January 10th. The tournament will be only one weekend, 2/6 at 3 pm and 2/7 at 8 am. Elks Training The Elks Training Test is a good way to learn more about the Elks. The test checks your knowledge of statutes, ritual, and other Elks manuals. Please have your officers and others interested fill out the test, and return it to the State Chairman: Gerald Wheeler, P.O. Box. 1769, Mesilla Park, NM. 88047-1769. Membership- So You Want to Join the Elks To be eligible for membership in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, you must be a citizen of the United States over the age of 21 who believes in God. You must be sponsored by a member of the Elks Lodge and reside in the jurisdiction of the Lodge you wish to join. You also need two other Elks who will be your co-sponsors. The Elk who proposes you for membership must obtain a Membership Application from the Lodge Secretary. REMEMBER, Membership is the life-blood of the Elks. More information soon.

Does your committee have some information you'd like everyone in the state to hear about? Have you done something fun that benefited Veterans, CP, or a local charity? Internet Operations Lodge websites, and Virtual Home Pages, will be judged in March, 2010. Winners of awards for websites will be announced at the State Convention in Roswell. All Lodges are eligible to win State awards for 2008-2009 for your websites.


Shorty Burkett Memorial Golf Tournament The New Mexico Elks Association held the Annual Shorty Burkett Memorial Golf Tournament May 15th and 16th, 2010, at the New Mexico Military Institute Golf Course in Roswell. In the Championship Flight, the winner was R. Sanford. 1st Flight, J. Pittman, 2nd Flight, Dub Bryan Roswell Lodge #969, and 3rd Flight, Vicki Frost from Tucumcari Lodge #1172. The Shorty Burkett trophy winner was Mike Stapleton, Roswell Lodge #969 for Low Gross, and the Ray Camp Trophy winner was Dub Bryan from Roswell Lodge #969 with Low Net. Charity money will be distributed as follows: Veteran, $6137.00; ENF, $5100; CP, $5100; and C & B Trust, $5500. The 4 man scramble winners were: V. Frost, J. Frost, R. Primrose, and R. Sanford. Youth Activities Many New Mexico Lodge participate in the "Dictionary Project", where every third grader gets a free dictionary from the local Elks Lodge. For more information: Visit the Dictionary Project
